World Heart Day

World Heart Day is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of September. World heart day encourages awareness of healthy heart. Heart disease and stroke are the world’s largest causes, claiming millions of lives every year.
World heart day began in 1999 in an effort to create awareness and educate risk factors for heart disease and stroke in the public to promote preventive measures. World heart day activities include public talks, free screenings, walks, runs, fitness events, scientific forums and exhibitions.

The theme of the world heart day is to “Team Up For Healthy Hearts”. The aim of this day is to encourage people to join together and create heart-healthy communities.
Role of heart in daily life is: physically it beats 70 times per minute and plays an important role in body functions and mentally, it shows kindness, generosity and sympathy in nature.
The causes of heart diseases and stroke in people include obesity, cigarette smoking and food habits. Lack of physical activity and improper diet can lead to obesity and it in turn increases the chances of heart disease. Intake of fatty and junk foods in large quantities also increases the risk of heart failures.

Preventive measures can reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends:
  • To develop policies that ensures access to screening and counseling services for heart disease and stroke risk factors
  • To create worksite, school, and health care facility education programs
  • To have access to healthy environments for physical activities and healthy foods
The heart foundation advises all families to team up and talk about how to react when someone starts to experience warning signs of a heart attack.
Adopting a healthy lifestyle helps in maintaining a healthy heart and prevents heart attacks and strokes. Choose a healthy diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, reduce the intake of saturated fats, avoid smoking, alcohol and be physically active.
Follow healthy lifestyle for a Healthy Heart.

Citizenship Day / Constitution Day on Sept 17th

Citizenship Day (also known as Constitution Day) marks the anniversary of the ratification of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. It also recognizes all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens.

The origin of this holiday dates back to 1940 when "I am an American Day" was celebrated on the third Sunday in May. In 1952, Congress moved the date to September 17 and renamed it “Citizenship Day.” In 2004, the official name changed to “Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.”

Education about the constitution is hugely encouraged, particularly on Constitution Day. Schools and educational establishments receiving any form of federal funding are required to teach the history of the American constitution on this day, but more than this many establishments such as universities and colleges look to celebrate the constitution by holding celebratory leisure events including ‘Constitution Trivia Quizes’ and community fairs. Constitution based merchandise is also made available in different forms from free paperback copies to t-shirts with constitution quotes.

World Photography Day on Aug 19th

World Photography Day celebrated on August 19 each year is about remembering how special a photo can be. We may take our photographs for granted but the next time we go through our photographs, we realize that those precious moments cannot again be captured, only shared, and with precious memories and feelings that only photographs can convey.
Early cave paintings show that man has always wanted to record himself, his activities, and the environment around him. Painters of great renown have abounded through the centuries and have left remarkable visual histories of our journey through time. While the camera was not invented until the 19th century, the basic elements of a camera had been known for hundreds of years.
As early as the 1400’s it was documented that inserting a lens in a hole would produce a crisper, clearer image. The technology which was known as “camera obscura” was used by artists to sketch objects more quickly. In 1847, the first ever photograph was taken by Joseph Niepce. A few years later, Louis Daguerre, a Frenchman painter for the Opera, experimented with various methods to try and secure a permanent image.

World Photography Day originates from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic process developed by Louis Daguerre. On January 9, 1839 The French Academy of Sciences announced the Daguerreotype process but a few months later on August 19, 1839 the French government announced the invention as a gift “free to the world.” Another photographic process, the Calotype, was also invented in 1839 but later announced in 1841. Together, the invention of both the Daguerreotype and Calotype processes mark 1839 as the year that photography was invented. On August 19th, celebrate photography and share your world with the world.

International Youth Day on Aug 12th

The United Nations’ (UN) International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12 each year to recognize efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage them in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities.

International Youth Day is a time to think about the different problems and challenges that face young people across the globe, such as malnutrition and disease. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the state of young people in each country.

In 1999, the General Assembly of the United Nations declared August 12th to be International Youth Day through resolution 54/120. Their hope was that people would organize activities on this day that would educate the public about issues that involve youth. They also wanted to promote the World Programme of Action for Youth, created in 1995 to find solutions to these situations.

Workaholics are pretty easy to spot. They are the first people to enter the office in the morning and the last to leave at the end of the day. On Workaholics Day, salute the workaholics in your office and help them relax.
If you are related to a workaholic, today is an especially important day for you. Pry this person away from his or her desk. Show them the benefits of a day off! Take an afternoon nap, read a book or procrastinate on the web. Tell them that they can finish their work tomorrow!

Workaholics Day is also a good opportunity to take a step back and evaluate your work ethic. Recognize the tremendous dedication that workaholics show but also think about the advantages of breaks. Today, try to work at a pace that achieves a happy medium. Find your balance!

National Chocolate Wafer Day on Jul 3rd

These crispy, sweet snacks are an American favorite. With their waffle surface pattern and thin layers, they can often be found accompanied with ice cream or cooked into other baked goods.

Build a Scarecrow Day

First Sunday in July is Build a Scarecrow Day. Are birds eating all of the fruits and vegetables in your garden faster than you can pick them? Solve your problem today—it’s Build a Scarecrow Day!

Wizard of Oz fans—don't be fooled. Your scarecrows don't need a brain! Birds and other animals often mistake scarecrows for people. So, they will likely stay away from the area that a scarecrow “watches over.” Scarecrows are relatively easy to build. All you need is some hay, a few articles of clothes, a stick and a hat.

Personalize your scarecrow by giving it pins, buttons and apparel from your favorite sports teams, schools or bands. This way, if you find that the intruders aren't frightened by it, you’ll still have a festive decoration for your garden!

Scarecrows are built to stand out in the garden to scare crows and other birds away. The crops are out growing in the field during the summer months. So, if you're going to build a scarecrow for your garden, the time is now. Hence, a July date.
Sometimes the scarecrow does his job quite effectively. The birds think someone is in the garden, and they stay away. Other times, they know better.  How can you tell that a bird is not scared by a scarecrow? When you see a bird resting upon a scarecrow, you can be pretty certain that the bird has not been fooled.

Stay Out Of The Sun Day on Jul 3rd

Stay Out of the Sun Day encourages us stay cool in the shade, and to give our skin a rest from the hot, damaging rays of the sun.
The sun is directly over head. We're in the middle of summer, when the temperatures are the hottest, and the sun is the brightest. It's not a bad day to take a break from catching all of those rays and stay out of the sun.
Find some fun and relaxing ways to stay in the shade. A hammock strung behind two shady tress sounds like a great way to go!

Doctor's Day on Jul 1st

The Doctor's Day is celebrated on July 1 all across India to honour the legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy. He was born on July 1, 1882 and passed away on the same date in 1962, aged 80 years. Doctor Roy was honoured with the highest civilian honour of Bharat Ratna in 1961.

However, the day will be observed as Black Day and doctors will hold a march from Gumar Mandi to protest against the Clinical Establishment Bill. The decision was taken by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Ludhiana.  According to the association, the government took the decision unilaterally, completely ignoring the problems of medical fraternity. The members said it will lead to tremendous increase in the cost of treatment due to expenses needed to fulfill the provisions of the Bill.

World UFO Day on Jul 2nd

Many people are certain that aliens from outer space have visited Earth. They believe that there is enough evidence to support alleged UFO (“Unidentified Flying Object”) sightings, such as the incident of 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico. That’s why today is World UFO Day!

The idea of aliens has always spiked human curiosity. Our imaginations run wild when we think about the possibility of life in worlds outside of our own. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that aliens have a prominent spot in Hollywood. A great way to celebrate World UFO day is to watch a science fiction movie. Some favorite flicks about extraterrestrials are "Star Wars", "Signs" and "E.T". If science fiction movies aren't your thing, dream up some intergalactic-themed crafts to make today, like a UFO-shaped cake!
No matter what you believe, today is the celebration of the possibility of life beyond Earth. So let your imagination soar and may the "force" be with you!

World UFO Day was first celebrated in 2001. For a while there were two World UFO days in the year: 24 June and 2 July; however, WUFODO (World UFO Day Organization) has now declared 2 July to be the official World UFO day.

I Forgot Day on Jul 2nd

A day to make up for forgetting birthdays, anniversaries, and even those days you think you might forget in the future.
I Forgot Day, by definition, today is not a day to remember. So, just what are you forgetting? Can you even remember? Is it important? Hopefully, not.
Some days are days to remember and to cherish all of our lives. Others, like today, are ones to be forgotten. If you are having a bad day, it's just as well that today is I Forgot Day. We do hope that you are not getting married or having a baby today.
Some people view today as an opportunity to express their regrets for forgetting something, and to make amends. They do so by sending cards and flowers, apologizing for their memory lapse. The trouble is, if you forget something important tomorrow, you have to wait a whole year for the next I Forgot Day to arrive.
